Pads are an essential part of woodwind instruments. If the instrument is to play to its potential, the seal between pad and tone hole must be as airtight as possible. An efficient mechanism is crucial to efficient padding. If there is considerable play in the key, it will move back and forth and side to side, making a consistently tight seal impossible. A major overhaul on a clarinet will take about ten hours, most of which is spent on the proper function of the mechanism. Once this is established, padding can then be done in 1-2 hours. Without preparing the mechanism first, the same result could not be obtained in any length of time.

We distinguish between several padding techniques. It has a big influence of the quality and lifetime of the work:

1. Pad floating ,
2. Press padding or steaming ,
3. Pad shimming ,
4. Cork grinding ,
