Natural Cracks

Cracks are a common phenomenon for all types of wood. They may occur while the tree is rooted in the ground, caused by wind, moisture, large animals leaning against them, or when they were cut and fell down to the ground. The preselected wood used to build instruments is usually of very high quality and crack-free with the ends waxed to prevent it from drying out too quickly.

natural crack, sometimes hard to detect but leaves gateway for air to escape

The wood is then either dried naturally over several years, predrilled, and finally turned to the needed dimensions or artificially dried in special ovens. Contrary to a widespread opinion, we observed no difference in the final acoustical or crack-related results when we compared both methods.
